If your answer is: the lowly Lincoln “cent”, you are right! Many a coin collector started out by building a set of Lincoln pennies. Perhaps you are one of them. First minted in 1909, the Lincoln cent will soon reach its 100th birthday. And what a birthday celebration it’s expected to be. Congress and our President have signed into law a bill that will change the Lincoln cent design in 2009.
Not just one new design, but four new cent designs are scheduled. (All 4 coins are to be issued during the same year, 2009.) Back in the year 1909 our country celebrated the 100th birthday of our famous president Abraham (Abe) Lincoln. To commemorate that event and honor the occasion, congress authorized a change in the copper penny design. Mid-year in 1909 the government stopped printing the Indian Head cent and began a new 1cent copper coin. It featured Lincoln’s portrait on the obverse(front) and Wheat straws on the reverse (back). At the time, some expected that Lincoln’s head on the 1 cent coin was to be a commemorative (one year) issue. However, it quickly became so popular with the public, the government kept the same penny design year after year. The obverse (front) of the coin has kept the same image of Lincoln for almost 100 years and is still with us today. Indian head cents were last minted in 1909 and never minted again.
The wheat back penny’s design was continued through 1958. In 1959 the reverse design was changed to show the Lincoln Memorial building. Four new Lincoln Pennies for 2009!The new designs to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday and the Lincoln Cents 100 birthday (in 2009) have not yet been developed. Stay tuned, it shouldn’t be long before the US mint shows us the details. So what’s your birthday plan for 2009?Mine is to collect some nice looking brilliant uncirculated (BU) issues of the new coins when they come out…. and maybe some mint proof versions, too. You better start looking through those old pennies again.Until then, I might just start looking for those missing older dates in my collection. Or, perhaps pick up a few extra cents of those hard to find mintmarks. My plan - Buy some scarcer date Lincoln cents.Another good plan might be to invest in some better date Lincoln cents, while they are affordable. Some 1909 dated pennies would be fun to own for most everyone. Most are affordable now and I wouldn't be surprised to see more coin collector buying of Lincoln cents (and prices to increase) as we get closer to Lincoln’s 200th birthday, and the Lincoln cent's 100th birthday. What do you think?
