Keeping track of the King's HobbyThere’s nothing like the hobby of kings – coin collecting. If you are a coin collector, you know what I mean. There are many aspects of enjoying a coin collection: admiring the beauty and details of coins; the fun in adding coins to your collection; comparing one coin to another; having some coins that are somewhat unique, unusual or hard to find; sharing the excitement with your family or friends; and . . . of course . . . if you have been a coin collector for a while . . . the pleasure you have when you see your collection appreciating in value.
At some point, you will run into one problem that many collectors have – “How do I keep up with all the coins that I’ve acquired?” A list of your inventory is what you will need. This can be done manually using a small notebook, or by purchasing a preprinted check-list guide. Perhaps you are already doing it. Either method may be just fine, if you don’t plan on adding to your collection, and have no interest in keeping up with the changing values. However, times have changed and using a personal computer coin inventory software may be just what you need.
There are several companies that sell computer inventory software, with some of them including a price guide in the software. After purchasing the software you can identify and add the coins you own to a data base. Most of the software companies allow you to print a completed inventory list and, if the software has price guide values loaded, it will include a total value which you can use for reference or insurance purposes. Some major software companies, such as Numismaster, allow you to do this on-line for a yearly fee. However, my personal preference is Coin Collector Assistant (with Values). You can purchase this software on the internet from several companies. They will send you a CD which is compatible with most all brands of computers that use the Windows XP or Vista operating system. Follow the instructions that come with the CD and you’ll have all your coin information stored on your own computer in no time. Later, should you want to keep up with the changing values of your collection, you can individually change prices in your computer. Or, for a small fee you can purchase an updated values list which is available each year. There are a lot more benefits and details included in this coin inventory software, so take a look at this product at – http://lynncoins.com/software.htm PS You can also purchase this software along with a software book on Coin Grading in a special coin software combination deal.
