The Braille Commemorative Coin

Legislative proposal

to honor Louis Braille in 2009

February 2006

 U.S. House of Representatives pass bill (Feb. 2006 – Bill # HR2872)

The bill authorizes the US Mint to mint up to 400,000 commemorative Silver Dollars.

(To become law the US Senate must approve the bill and the President must sign it.)

Louis Braille invented a raised-dot alphabet that enables the blind and sight impaired to easily read.

Braille Silver Dollar for 2009

The new Braille Dollar Coins would be released in 2009 to commemorate the 200th birthday of Louis Braille.  This special one dollar US coin will be required to have an obverse (front) design depicting Louis Braille.  The reverse design will emphasize Braille literacy.  Coins will be minted of solid coin silver (90% pure silver).  $10.00 from the sale of each genuine silver dollar coin will go to the National Federation of the Blind.

 About Louise Braille

Louise Braille went blind at the young age of 3.  He was born in Paris France in 1809.  While a toddler, he was playing with his father’s feather awl and accidentally poked his eye.  An infection set in that spread to both eyes.  Within days he was permanently blind.

As a young man he looked for way to help people like himself.  He developed an idea based on a French army code that was used at the time.  It consisted of dots and dashes to spell out words.  He modified it into a system of raised dots.  Different combinations of dots signify a different letter of the alphabet.  Once the Braille system is learned a blind person can feel the dots with his/her finger tips and tell what letters they are touching.  After some experience doing this a person can read fairly rapidly.  Today many libraries around the globe have books written in Braille.
