About Louise BrailleLouise Braille went blind at the young age of 3. He was born in Paris France in 1809. While a toddler, he was playing with his father’s feather awl and accidentally poked his eye. An infection set in that spread to both eyes. Within days he was permanently blind. As a young man he looked for way to help people like himself. He developed an idea based on a French army code that was used at the time. It consisted of dots and dashes to spell out words. He modified it into a system of raised dots. Different combinations of dots signify a different letter of the alphabet. Once the Braille system is learned a blind person can feel the dots with his/her finger tips and tell what letters they are touching. After some experience doing this a person can read fairly rapidly. Today many libraries around the globe have books written in Braille. < - -Back to Coin Articles and News
