COIN COLLECTOR's ABBREVIATIONS

and Acronyms Section

Here you can look up those abbreviations that coin dealers and experts are using. Find out the meanings by clicking on the links

below.

Ideal for beginning coin collectors and experienced numismatists.  We think you will find these lists helpful in learning the lingo of the coin collecting hobby.

Abbreviations starting with the letters

G - H - I - J - K - L - M - N

gm
- 'gram' - a small metric system weight.  About 31.1 grams make up a troy ounce of precious metal.  (Ordinary ounces are equal to about 28.35 grams.)  Gold and other precious metals are sometime weighed in grams rather than troy ounces.
HGE
- 'Heavy Gold Electroplate" - indicates a thin layer of gold electroplated on the outside of a coin or object.  See Heavy Gold Electroplate for more information.
MS
- 'Mint State" - indicates a coin is uncirculated and does not exhibit any visible wear.  MS coins fall into the 60 to 70 point range in today's most popular grading scale (which uses 70 as the highest grade possible). Example, a mint state uncirculated silver dollar receiving the grade of 65, would be called MS65 or MS-65.
NGC
- "Numismatic Guarantee Corporation" - One of the three most popular coin grading certification services today.  They are considered a third party service, in that they are not directly controlled by any coin dealers.
NPQ
- "National Parks Quarters" - New US QUARTER series begun in 2010 to commemorate US National Parks and monuments.  See National Parks Quarters for more information.
